Why Do I Have Crooked Teeth?

April 4, 2022

Most people wish they were blessed with perfect teeth. Unfortunately, only a few are. Most have misalignment or overcrowding issues, and many of them have visited an orthodontist to enhance the appearance of their smile. Teeth extractions in Sioux City may be performed to create space.

But why is that? What causes adults to have crooked teeth? Is it possible to prevent adult teeth from becoming misaligned? Is it genetic to have crooked teeth? Here are some fundamental oral health information and suggestions for preventing crooked teeth.

Causes of Crooked Teeth

Bad Habits

Most cases of crooked teeth are due to genetics, although unhealthy habits are also sometimes to blame. If kids press their tongues against their mouths, breathe heavily through their mouths, or suck their thumbs, they can cause their teeth to misalign.

Baby Teeth Loss at an Early Age

Between the ages of seven months and a year, babies develop their first teeth. They're known as primary teeth, and they serve as placeholders for the larger, permanent set of teeth that will appear around the age of three.

If a primary tooth is lost too soon, either due to accident, disease, or natural loss, the other teeth may move to cover the gap. When the permanent teeth eventually replace the baby teeth, they may shift out of place and grow crookedly.

Genetics

Misaligned teeth seem to run in families. This is because genetics can have an impact on:

  • The number of teeth: The average adult has 28 teeth, however depending on whether wisdom teeth are present, some adults have as many as 32. Wisdom teeth emerging, unfortunately, can clog the mouth and shift teeth alignment, which is one of the main reasons orthodontists and other specialized dentists recommend wisdom teeth removal.
  • Tooth size: Different teeth are larger than others. Those with larger teeth may be more crowded, whereas those with smaller teeth may have gaps in their mouth.
  • Jaw size: If a person's jaw is too small, their teeth will battle for space inside the mouth. As a consequence, they tend to overlap, resulting in misaligned teeth that are very noticeable. The teeth may not occupy the remaining area of your mouth if the jaw is too broad. Teeth might shift position as a result of the gaps that occur.

Risks of Having Crooked Teeth

Aside from your appearance and self-esteem, crooked teeth can also result in excess tooth wear, speech difficulties, improper chewing, and gum disease. Teeth misalignment can make chewing difficult and cause stomach issues. Likewise, self-esteem may suffer as a result of your dissatisfaction with your appearance.
